Sierra Nevada Foothills
The foothills of Sierra Nevada.
During early December 2007, I embarked on an eight day road trip to the US Southwest. Our first stop was the Grand Canyon, which was almost a 12 hour drive from the Bay area, California. On day one of the trip, we were crossing the massive Sierra Nevada range sometime in the afternoon. Crossing the foothills, this scene caught my attention, and we had to absolutely pull to the side of the road, get down and spend half an hour trying to photograph this scene.
What drew me to this seen was the contrast in the grassy foothills and the tree covered mountains in the back. The clouds above were positioned just right so that the grass covered sloes were out in the sunlight while the rest were in shade. The bright blue sky with puffy clouds were irresistible too.

Like the clean brown range in the foreground .. and how the trees look like miniatures.
You usually have the sky and clouds well under control .. but they feel blown out here ..
and your aversion to using a polariser
else u might have had really blue skies and puffy clouds.
There seems to be slightly blue haze in the background range.
I think I understand what you were trying to capture .. but that might hav req a bit more panoramic composition ( and I know you like this aspect ratio, but .. ) this is a little too squarish I feel?

Nice shot!! A good one to stop driving.
I agree with you on the contrast of the two mountains. Was this a HDR image?
I felt that the clouds were a little too bright and drawing attention away from the details.

No, this was not an HDR image. Just one normal exposure.
Vikas, I have noted your comments. Will see what I can do to remove the haze. Come to think of it, panoramic aspect would have been just right…Oh well, next time.
