Big Cypress Natural Preseve, Florida

I got the opportunity to visit Everglades National Park and its neighbor, Big Cypress National Preserve back in October. Even though it was early afternoon, and the sun was high, there were tons of things to photograph. Especially in infrared.

In this particular photograph, the foreground is actually a canal – I loved how the water turned black. The grass white and the trees lighter. With infrared, everything looks so familiar, yet so strange. It makes one look deeper into the photograph – at least I think so. Very soon, I’ll come up with my version of processing for infrared in Lightroom.

Big Cypress Natural Preseve, Florida

I got the opportunity to visit Everglades National Park and its neighbor, Big Cypress National Preserve back in October.

The Big Cypress Natural Preserve is but one big swamp – more than 2,400 square miles. As its name suggests, it is about 1/3rd covered with cypress trees. The cypress trees are mostly found on the edge of the wet prairies where the water is very slowly draining into the ocean. This photograph shows one such stand of cypress trees. This was shot from the side of the Tamiami trail. These stands of cypress trees against a glorious sky. What a place!

Big Cypress Natural Preseve, Florida

I got the opportunity to visit Everglades National Park and its neighbor, Big Cypress National Preserve back in October. When I drove up, my first stop was at Clyde Butcher’s “Big Cypress Gallery” on the Tamiami trail. Clyde’s photographs and his story are amazing. You can take a look at some of his photos at his website. I found this very good interview of Clyde Butcher at the Double Exposure website.

So after spending some time looking at Clyde’s huge black and white photographs, I was extremely enthusiastic to go out and do some shooting of my own. It was a beautiful day, though it was just past noon by the time I got done loking at Clyde’s photographs. Also I had left late that morning for my 4 hr drive. What to do? All the beautiful morning light was gone. So out came my tiny (or not so tiny) G9 with the infrared filter. This photograph is one in a series I made that afternoon. I must say, the more I shoot in infrared, the more I seem to like it.

I got the opportunity to visit Everglades National Park and its next door neighbour, Big Cypress National park back in October. It was a day of lovely clouds. – big huge white puffy ships and dragons in the sky. I used my G9 with the Hoya R72 filter for this Infrared photograph, and processed it in Lightroom.

Alviso Marina, Alviso, California.

This photograph is the beginning of a series of photographs taken in Alviso. This photograph was shot using an infrared filter.

Next to Santa Clara, in the middle of Silicon Valley, Alviso is like nothing around. Annexed by San Jose in 1968, it is nothing like San Jose. Alviso is the city of San Jose’s only access to the bay. However the water has receeded., and what was once a marina is filled with grass and marsh.

A very nicely written excerpt from the “Ghost marina of Alviso“Created in 1965, the Alviso Marina was once the refuge of myriad boats. Dredging was required to keep the waterway open for increasingly larger vessels. When dredging became unfeasable in the late 1970′s, the silt, reeds, and grass closed in, staking claim to their natural habitat. It is now a marina of ghosts and grass.”

Car Husk, Bodie, CA

Looks like, this weeks theme for my photos is going to be this car. I’m so fascinated by the various aspects of it…especially, the tire fenders (I think that is the right word for it), the beautiful shapes that I had to make many pictures of this guy. And I have a few angles of this beauty which I want to share. One thing that astounds me is I cannot point to any one main thing which I find attractive about
this car, no main feature…I can name a few of them which all add up to make this a very attractive car indeed.

This was shot in Bodie, a ghost town on the north eastern edge of Yosemite National Park, close to the town of Bridgeport. I was there shooting from sunrise. The idea was to shoot from sunrise till the light got very difficult to work with, then go back for a midday nap and come back in the evening for another shoot. So before I left for the morning, 4 hrs after sunrise, I found this car and spent a good amount of time shooting him. Why do I call this car “him”? It reminds me of an adorable grandpa person!

Also, from today onwards, in the technical details section, I will add the time the photo was taken and sunset or sunrise time for the day depending, thanks to Vikas’ suggestion. I must thank all of you who bother to leave me comments. Thanks for your time and effort. I will certainly try to reply to these comments at least every second day.
