Wild turkey

Wild Turkey

Wild Turkey, Zion National Park, Utah.

From Wikipedia: “Turkeys are surprisingly agile fliers and very cunning, unlike their domestic counterparts. In flight they can reach a speed of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). They usually fly close to the ground for no more than a quarter mile (400 m). Turkeys have many vocalizations: “gobbles,” “clucks,” “putts,” “purrs,” “yelps,” “cutts,” “cackles,” and “kee-kees.” In early spring, male turkeys, also called gobblers or toms, gobble to announce their presence to females and competing males. The gobble can carry for up to a mile. Males also emit a low-pitched drumming sound. Hens “yelp” to let gobblers know their location. Gobblers often yelp in the manner of females, and hens can gobble, though they rarely do so. Immature males, called jakes, yelp often.”

Contemplation – 1

Contemplation - 1

Contemplation – 1, Zion National park, Utah.

This photo is first of a series I’m calling “Contemplation”. While waiting for sunrise over the Virgin river cliffs in Zion National Park, shivering in the cold, the eddies of water around rocks and its subtle delicate colors attracted my attention. It was a peaceful contrast to the bright almost garish, in comparison, colors of the sunrise on the red cliffs, just like the serenity in witnessing the sun rise. I hope I can convey the peaceful exuberance of those moments in this series.

Patterns in Sand

Patterns in Sand

Coral Pink Sand Dunes NP, Utah.

Around sunset, the sand in this SP is an amazing Coral pink. That with sand patterns and the claw marks created an atmosphere which was beautiful and interesting. What was this bird doing walking all over the place ? There were no beak marks to indicate that the bird was looking for food…maybe the bird was enjoying the solitude and scenery?

Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP

Coral Pink Sandunes SP

Coral pink Sand Dunes SP, Utah.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP is found a few miles north of Kanab, Utah on the way to Zion NP. We visited this park in December to find this spectacular scene: Pine covered sandstone cliffs in the far back, the coral colored sand dunes in the middle, the dying sand dunes in front with plants growing on the sand, all sprinkled with pristine snow. No other human was in the park at this time. We were sharing this amazing view with a herd of mule deer who were also enjoying the view, with one wary eye at us.

The park’s sand dunes are created because a notch between the Moquith and Moccasin mountains funnels the prevailing winds. This increases their velocity so much that they can carry sand grains in what is called the Venturi Effect. These sand dunes are coral pink in color thanks to the eroding Navajo Sandstone formations surrounding the park.

Note: I personally feel that this is not a very good shot technically..harsh shadows, too much contrast etc. But it does show the environment and I had to absolutely share this photo.

Spirals

Spirals

Upper Antelope Canyon, Page.

Upper Antelope Canyon or “Corkscrew Canyon” is called Tse bighanilini, “the place where water runs through rocks” by the Navajo. True to its Navajo name, this slot canyon flash floods every winter a few times. We were told by the Navajo guide that the rushing water deposits sand in the slot canyon increasing the height of the floor. So the Navajo people sweep away the added mud to keep the floor level at pretty much the same height.

Upper Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon, Page, Az

Day 5 of the trip found us in Upper Antelope Canyon. We drove up to the entrance next to the coal plant in Page, and a Navajo guide standing there took us to the mouth of the canyon on her 4WD for $25.00 per head. The roads were sandy and slicky and slippery, and the air was cold. Winter is definitely not a popular time to visit this place…The guide, us and two other professional photographers who were there for a photo shoot, supposedly for the past 10 days! There was no overhead sun, and so at the entrance, the brilliant colors which this canyon is famous for were not to be seen. Instead we were greeted by delicate purple and subtle tones of pink. However towards the end of the canyon, where this photo was taken, was a semblance of the bright glow seen in summer! In summer, this area is a prime spot for the beams to hit the floor of the canyon.
